Is there some conversion cord I need? Or is my printer obsolete?!

Ideal way it to contact HP help desk. Look in your manual for their !-800 number.
If you’ve lost the manual go to either Best Buy or some other store which has HP printers and get the number from one of their manuals.
What you most likely have is a IEE48 cable if I remember correctly.
The ports in you laptop is most likely and USB2 plug.
Look on the back of your printer and see if it also has a USB2 port.
You are going to new a best an adapter cable if your printer does not have a USB2 plug in port.

For the prices of new printers now, you would probably spend almost as much on an adaptor. Get a new printer and save yourself the hassle.

I'm not sure what kind of connection the old cord is but you most likely need a USB adapter.
