I purchased an HP printer for $69 and I had to go back and pay $51 for inc and a $33 cord.What a scam.

It's not just HP - it's all of them. Lexmark and Dell are the worst. They give away their printers in order to hook suckers on $40 cartridges. This situation was made worse around March 2007 when a judge ruled that printer companies could make printers which would reject compatible cartridges. Can you imagine if you had to purchase Ford gas with your Ford and Chevy gas with your Chevy? Then envision if it was $30 a gallon. That still wouldn't compare because printer ink is $5,000 a gallon! Figure it out. You pay about $20 for a 12 ml cartridge. It takes about 80 of these to make a liter and close to 4 liters to make a gallon. Do the math.
So what can you do about it? For one thing, use compatible cartridges. Make sure they are brand new, not refilled or remanufactured, and have a warranty. For another, you can find printers that are almost free after rebate and will cost less than a set of cartridges for your old one. I would not have paid $51 $33 or $84 to get an old printer working when I can purchase a new one for $22 or a brand new color laser for $80.
Unless you totally need pic quality, go with a laser. Lasers have sharper text and are generally faster than inkjets. While toner cartridges are more high-priced than ink, they print more pages, so the cost per page is lower. But you pay more up front. Inkjets are superior for pics. Personally, I use both. I have an inkjet for photos and a color laser for jobs which don't need absolute pic quality.

I’ve this printer and it's really nice. Toner cartridges are more high-priced then inkjet cartridges ($70 for a set of 4 at http://ccs-digital.com/ink.asp ) but they last for about 2,000 pages.It does a nice job on photos, but an inkjet is still superior for this.
Inkjet: As someone who was in the computer hardware business for years (though I rarely sold printers since I couldn't compete with the crazy rebates) I’ve always suggested Epson. The print quality is excellent, even on plain paper. I have pics I printed on a 640 about ten years ago hanging in my office which still look good, though not as good as the ones from the CX8400 on glossy paper. The warranty is excellent. For a year, Epson will express-ship a replacement and pick up the old one. I had one customer who needed this. He called one afternoon and had the replacement two days later. Another client purchased a Canon. It needed two repairs within a few months. Each time it was taken to the repair center, then picked up a few days later. This client runs a specialty printing business and this really injured. They have since purchased an Epson CX5000 and have had no down time since.
