They do not. All light is made of a mixture of the colours of the rainbow, red, orange,yellow,indigo, blue and violet.
A printer chooses the correct mix of each of its' individual colours to match the colour code the personal requests. Most colour cartridges contain 3 colours, red, cyan(a variation on blue) and yellow. High quality printers, and some of the newer home ones now have 4.
The print head injects the correct mixture of each for the required colour.

The software is what controls the imaging as far as which color should predominate or not. If you go in the printer preferences or the Toolbox that came with your software, some have printer service menu where you can control the different ink.
Still, the best way is through the software itself or if you use photoshop or Corel, you can control the different inks perfectly.
