I loaded the new cartridge and when I test print I get the message asking whether the cartidge is black and white or color, whether it is new or old. I can't get it to work. I know the printer is in good condition as I used it a couple of days ago. The printer is dell 720 and the cartridge is original dell black ink. Please help.

One thing that you might want to try is this:
Turn the printer off, unplug it from the electric outlet for a minute or two, and then plug it back in. Sometimes this helps to “reset” the printer.

Make sure it is in the right spot for starters. The electronics could be bad on the cartridge, rare, but does happen.
Try to reinstall the cartridge, and follow the instructions step by step. If it doesn't work, get a replacement
