Answer:
Sounds like you may need to clean the carriage contacts in your printer. Here's how:

1.

Wipe the contacts by the procedure below:

1.

Remove both cartridges. See your printer's manual or help files for specific information on removing and inserting cartridges. Most HP printers must be turned on to remove the cartridges..

2.

Unplug the printer.

3.

Wipe the copper-colored electrical contacts with a clean, dry, lint-free cotton cloth.

WARNING: Be careful not to touch the nozzle area.

4. Reinstall the cartridges, close the front cover, and plug the printer back in.

2.

If wiping the contacts does not solve the problem, clean them more thoroughly by the procedure below:

1.

Gather cleaning supplies:

* Clean distilled water. Use bottled or filtered water if distilled water isn’t available.

* Clean cotton swabs or any soft, lint-free material that will not stick to the cartridges (coffee filters work well).

2.

Remove both cartridges.

3.

Unplug the printer.

4.

Lightly moisten the lint-free cleaning material with clean water.

5.

Clean the cartridge contacts. Avoid touching the nozzles. Replace the cleaning material if it gets dirty.

6.

Using a new swab, clean the electrical contacts inside the printer, in the carriage.

7. Allow all the contacts to dry for at least five minutes, then reinstall the cartridges.

8.

Close the front cover and plug the printer back in.

Secondarily I'd suggest printing a clean test page. If the clean test page prints correctly, the printer and cartridges are functioning properly. Any print quality problem is probably caused by the personal or software. Follow the steps below to solve the problem:

1.

Check your printer software settings. From most Windows applications, click File , Print , then make sure your printer is selected and click Properties . Check the following settings:

*

If you are trying to print in color, make sure Print in Grayscale isn’t selected.

*

Make sure the Paper Type matches your paper.

*

Set the Quality value as recommended for your paper type. However, if the printout is smearing or bleeding, try reducing quality or increasing speed. On the other hand, if the printout is streaked, light, or does not look filled in, try increasing quality or reducing speed.

2.

Try printing an image (ideally, the same image) from another software application, such as MS Paint. In Windows, you can open MS Paint by clicking Begin , Programs , Accessories , then Paint . If the second application prints correctly, there’s something wrong with the settings of the first application. Investigate the first application's settings or contact the manufacturer of the first application for help.

3.

Your computer resources may be low. Restart the computer and then try printing again.

4.

Check your printer driver version and update if necessary. Click here to locate HP driver downloads.

5.

If none of the steps above have solved the problem, remove and reinstall the printer software.
