it is an all in one printer so is convenient for a student. would the printer come free with cartridges or not? or would I have to buy it additionally?

Yes. All printers include ink cartridges.
By the way, before you buy, be sure and check the prices on those cartridges. There exists websites that’ll tell you the total cost of ownership for printers.

Most printers usually come with cartridges to get your started. In the old days, you got some that allowed you print about 20 pages before they crapped out. This day, I'm sure you'll get full-capacity ones in the box.
Make sure you’ve paper. They don't give you that!

Yes but they wont be full! They’ll be “sample” catridiges which might last a few prints but not a lot.
Also argos have a habit of NOT supplying a printer USB cable. You’ll need to buy one, but check the box before you leave.
