I'm fed up with having to purchase new print cartridges for my printer. It's ridiculous, they cost more than the printer itself! I tried refilling my cartridge with a refill kit, I took the cartridge out and prized off the green cap so I could get to the sponges that hold the ink, I filled the 3 sponges with the right colours. When I put the cartridge back together and put it back in the printer, it worked, but it still says the ink level is as low as it was before I refilled it, even tho I put so much ink into the sponges that it was nearly overflowing. Why is it telling me the ink is low when clearly it's not? I don't see the point of paying 20-30 pounds, when I could purchase a refill kit for a fiver and use that. What's the right way to do it?
Answer:
I know the Cartridges have a chip that grants your printer to communicate with the Cartridges - this can be seen with the Date/Out of Date Error. I would conclude this same chip might have a way of detecting the lowering of ink and is not reset back to full when refilled.
I'm guessing yet does seem to meet the criteria of your problem.

Resetting a Lexmark printer
You’ll firstly need to switch off your printer. Then simultaneously press the RETURN and READY keys while switching the printer on. This will take you to the Diagnostics Mode. The display unit will show the message ‘Performing self test’. Select ‘Maintenance count’. Reset the count to make it zero. Then choose the RETURN key and go back Diagnostics Mode. Then you can reset the printer to go back to the normal mode
