I'm a poor college student so price is a variable. :] I'm looking for swift sharp prints. At first I figured Laser is the way to go but I'm not so sure. Color Lasers begin at 200 so maybe an ink jet with cheaper cartridges. I mostly print school papers, make duplicates, and from time to time need crisp color. (I would print photos if my printer had the abilities.) Someone help!! Thanks so much. ![]()

My choice is Canon. Those models that using CLI-8 and PGI-5 cartridges. Cheap compatible cartridges and even cheaper - simple to refill - great print quality. Sharp text - great quality pic.
I had 2 HP, 3 Epson printers, 1 Lexmark and 2 Canon - Canon is the best for me.

Answer:
Try a Lexmark X1150.
This is not the newest model (there are newer models in the series) They cost under $100. This is a printer, copier, scanner, fax. Very good text quality.
It can do colors, and can print photos, though it isn’t a photo printer, per state.
The black cartridges are around $35, but that is for the massive ones - and they last a long time. Often Staples has them in a 2 pack, for $50.
I would purchase the small color one, though, unless you do lots of color printing.

If you're just looking for a printer the HP Photosmart D5460 is a great choice. Looks like they sell it for about $90 right now. It uses separate ink cartridges so you only have to buy that one that runs out, and the ink costs per printed page (not the price of the cartridges) is quite reasonable.
I personally use the HP Photosmart D7260… it has some extra features (like a touch screen for printing photos) and it too is reasonably priced ink.
Edit: They're both “photo” printers but print great black text/documents and crisp, cleap photos.
